The purpose of the Eugene River Festival is to bring the community together to enjoy and celebrate the Willamette River by highlighting its unique history, culture, ecology and recreation opportunities in Eugene and Springfield. The Eugene River Festival is committed to family-friendly fun, with free opportunities for all to explore and enjoy the natural river corridor through a diversity of human-powered activities. The Festival also honors and recognizes that we are on Kalapuya Ilhi – the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people who were here first, and who will always be here. Our partnership provides a framework and space for all groups working to enjoy, protect and restore the Willamette River.
2017 was the first inaugural Eugene River Festival, featuring a Vendor Base Camp; including registration, food carts and non-profit education booths. Over 250 participants attended and enjoyed canoeing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and experiencing native Kalapuya tribal traditions and wooden paddle canoe. Other fun activities included a raffle and geocaching on the canoe-canal. We believe the Eugene River Festival has the potential to strengthen our community’s connection with river by enjoying a positive water recreation experience, and we’re expecting the event to double its attendance in 2018.
The Eugene River Festival is supported by the City of Eugene Recreation Program, and marketed to over 45,000 people in the Eugene REC guide, as well as people beyond the City’s subscribers online and through partnering online channels such as the University of Oregon Outdoor Program, Willamette Riverkeeper, Willamette Kayak & Canoe Club, Northwest Canoe Tours and more!
